Hives don’t care about your fitness level. You can be in the best shape of your life and still wake up covered in red, raised welts. They’re your body’s histamine response to allergens, and they can pop up anywhere. Most people get them at some point. Here’s how to deal with them.
1. Consult with an Allergist
Hives are typically an allergic reaction, so see an allergist. They’ll run an allergy test to figure out what’s triggering them. You might be allergic to multiple things (people often are). The allergist can prescribe medication or point you toward effective over-the-counter options.
2. Cool Off
Hives itch. Sometimes they burn or sting. A cold bath helps. Fill the tub and sit in it for 15 to 20 minutes. The cold water calms the itching and reduces inflammation. Do this twice daily while you’re dealing with breakouts.
3. Antihistamines
Benadryl works. It’ll make you drowsy, but it relieves hives symptoms. Follow the dosage directions on the package exactly. Taking too much creates new problems you don’t need. Use it daily according to the instructions.
Stress can trigger hives too. If you’re dealing with mental stress, address it through relaxation techniques or talk to someone about it. If the hives stick around for more than a few days, see a doctor.
