Ageing wrinkles naturally accumulate – and wrinkles generally aren’t reversible. You’re not reversing time here, but you can make your skin look plumper and reduce the depth of lines without spending a fortune on creams promising miracles in tiny jars. Most natural approaches work by either hydrating the skin (which temporarily plumps it) or triggering mild repair responses. You can do both with things you probably already own.
What Causes Wrinkles
The main driver is UV damage – decades of sun exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm. Age slows collagen production on its own, but sun accelerates it dramatically. Add in repeated facial movements (squinting, frowning, smiling), poor hydration, and sleeping with your face mashed into a pillow every night, and you’ve got the full picture. Smoking is a major contributor most people underestimate – it restricts blood flow to skin and wrecks collagen faster than almost anything else.
1. Retinol (vitamin A)
The one with actual science behind it. Retinol speeds up cell turnover, which means your skin sheds dead cells faster and produces fresh ones. Over time (months, not days), this reduces fine lines and improves texture.
Buy over-the-counter retinol creams or use rosehip oil, a natural source containing trans-retinoic acid. Start with a pea-sized amount every other night. Your skin will likely get red and flaky for the first few weeks. That’s normal. Don’t use it during the day – it makes your skin more sun-sensitive, which causes the exact damage you’re trying to fix.
2. Face massage and facial exercises
Sounds like nonsense, but there’s logic here. Massaging your face increases blood flow, and some studies suggest facial exercises build the underlying muscles, giving skin more support.
Use your fingertips in upward strokes for 5-10 minutes daily. Add a bit of oil (coconut, olive, almond) so you’re not dragging dry skin around.

3. Aloe vera
Taking aloe internally increases collagen production. One study found daily aloe gel supplements for 90 days significantly improved skin elasticity. Topically it moisturizes, but the real benefit is from eating it.
Blend 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of fresh aloe into a smoothie daily. It’s bitter, so mix it with something sweet.

4. Egg white mask
Egg whites tighten skin temporarily as they dry. Not permanent, but useful if you need to look less crinkly for a few hours.
Whisk one egg white, apply to clean skin, leave 15 minutes, rinse with warm water. The effect lasts maybe 4-6 hours. Once a week maximum.
5. Vitamin C serum
Vitamin C supports collagen production and fights the free radical damage that ages skin. You can make a basic serum: dissolve 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of L-ascorbic acid powder in 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of distilled water, store in a dark bottle, use within a week. Apply in the morning before moisturizer. Test a small patch first – some skin hates it.
6. Stay hydrated
Dehydrated skin shows every line. Drinking enough water won’t erase wrinkles, but it makes your skin look plumper, which makes fine lines less obvious. If your urine is dark yellow, drink more. That’s the whole method.
7. Moisturize
Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer right after you shower while your skin is still slightly damp. That locks moisture in. Do it once or twice daily. A humidifier in winter helps too, since heating systems strip moisture from indoor air. Fragrance and irritants in cosmetics are the enemy here – most products with long ingredient lists will cause more problems than they solve.
8. Sleep on your back
Pressing your face into a pillow every night for decades creates sleep lines that eventually become permanent wrinkles. Side sleepers show more lines on their dominant sleep side. Train yourself to sleep on your back – use a pillow under your knees to reduce lower back strain. If you can’t manage it, a silk or satin pillowcase at least reduces friction.
9. Alter the way you sleep
Beyond position, how elevated your head is matters. Lying flat lets fluid pool around your eyes and face overnight, which stretches skin repeatedly over time. A slight elevation (one extra pillow) reduces that pooling. Combined with back-sleeping, you get the full benefit.
10. Anti-aging cream
Retinol creams from the drugstore work. Start a few times a week since retinol irritates skin if you overdo it early. Give it at least six weeks before deciding if it’s working. For stronger results, prescription retinoids from a dermatologist are more effective but finicky to use correctly.
11. Banana mask
Bananas contain vitamins A and E, both useful for skin repair. Mash half a ripe banana, apply to your face, leave 20 minutes, rinse. Do this 2-3 times a week. Cheap and gives a decent moisture boost, even if you’ll smell like a fruit stand.
Prevention
Sunscreen every day is the single biggest thing. UV damage is the primary cause of wrinkles, so stopping it does more than anything you’ll try after the fact. SPF 30 minimum, reapplied if you’re outside. Wear sunglasses to reduce squinting. Don’t smoke. And keep up the moisturizing – skin that stays hydrated ages more slowly than dry skin does.
