You’ve got a cold. You know you’ve got a cold. Runny nose, sore throat, that feeling like your head’s stuffed with wet cotton. And you know there’s no cure.
But that doesn’t mean you just suffer through it. Here’s what actually helps.
1. Get Plenty of Rest
This is the big one. Your immune system is fighting 200+ possible virus variants (that’s why there’s no vaccine), and it needs you horizontal. Sleep as much as you can. Cancel plans. Your body does the heavy lifting while you’re unconscious.
Most colds clear up in 5 days if you let your immune system do its job.
2. Drink Plenty of Water
Fevers dehydrate you. Coughing dehydrates you. Your nose is literally dripping fluid out of your body. Replace it.
Aim for 8-10 glasses a day. More if you’re running hot or coughing constantly.
3. Eat Nutritious Food
Your immune system burns through nutrients fighting infection. Give it ammunition. Fruits, vegetables, protein. Not the time for three days of ramen.
And yeah, chicken soup. No scientific backing, but everyone swears by it. The warmth helps, the salt helps, and honestly the placebo effect counts when you feel this bad.
4. Use Petroleum Jelly with Menthol
Vicks VapoRub. That mentholated petroleum jelly your grandmother used. Rub it on your chest and the fumes open up your airways while you sleep.
It won’t cure anything, but it’ll let you breathe easier.

5. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Killers
Ibuprofen or acetaminophen knock down the fever and handle the body aches. Take as directed on the bottle.
Note: Don’t give kids aspirin. Risk of Reye’s syndrome.
6. Use Cough Medicines
A bad cough will keep you awake, which defeats the whole "rest" strategy. Cough suppressants (dextromethorphan) quiet the cough. Expectorants (guaifenesin) loosen the mucus so you can cough it up.
Pick whichever matches your cough type.
7. Gargle with Salt Water
Half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle for 30 seconds, spit.
This soothes sore throats and can help with congestion. Do it 3-4 times a day.

8. Eat Spicy Foods
If you can handle it, spicy food clears sinuses fast. Temporarily. Hot sauce, wasabi, Thai curry. Your nose will run even more for about 10 minutes, then everything opens up.
9. Inhale Steam
Lean over a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head. Breathe deep for 5-10 minutes.
The steam opens clogged passages and the heat might even knock back some virus particles (cold viruses hate heat). Just don’t burn yourself.

10. Take Garlic Supplement
Garlic has natural antimicrobial properties. Won’t cure the virus, but it might shorten the duration. Take it in capsule form unless you want to smell like a pizzeria.
11. Take Vitamin C
The classic. Science is split on whether it actually works, but it won’t hurt. 500-1000mg a day. Some people swear it shortens colds. Others see no difference.
Worth trying.
12. Take Zinc
Zinc lozenges within 24 hours of symptoms starting might cut a day or two off your cold. Suck on them, don’t swallow them whole. They taste metallic and awful, but that’s the trade-off.
13. Take Echinacea
Herbal remedy that’s supposed to boost your immune system. Often sold combined with vitamin C. Mixed evidence on effectiveness, but many people use it.
If you’re going to try it, start at the first sign of symptoms.
What Won’t Work
Antibiotics. This is a virus, not bacteria. Antibiotics do nothing except mess up your gut flora.
And yeah, you’ve heard someone say "sweat it out" or "starve a cold." Neither of those is real advice. Rest, fluids, time. That’s it.
